Pathways

See how people move between zones on a floor

Summary

Pathways shows how people move between zones on a floor. It displays the most common routes people take during a visit as a flow diagram, so you can see where visits start, where people go next, and which zones connect to each other. Pathways is built from anonymized device data and is designed for comparing routes and spotting movement patterns.

Overview

To open Pathways, go to the Spaces section in the left navigation bar and select the Pathways tab.

Pathways answers questions such as:

  • Where do people usually go first when they arrive on a floor?

  • Which zones do people move between most often?

  • After visiting a zone (for example, a café or meeting area), where do people go next?

Key benefits

  • Understand real movement patterns between spaces, not just how full each space is.

  • Identify high-traffic connections that may affect layout, wayfinding or amenity placement.

  • Compare movement patterns between groups using Smart Groups.

How Pathways works

  1. Visits are grouped into sessions. InnerSpace groups each anonymized device's visits on a floor into a session, in time order.

  2. Zone changes become steps. Each time someone moves from one zone to a different zone, that counts as one step. Staying in the same zone does not create a new step. Very short pass-through detections and locations that can't be assigned to a zone are left out.

  3. Routes are counted. InnerSpace counts how many sessions followed each route during your selected timeframe.

  4. The diagram is drawn. The results appear as a flow diagram.

  • Each column is a step in a visit. The first column is where visits start, the next column is where people went next, and so on.

  • Each bar is a zone. A taller bar means more devices.

  • Each band between bars shows devices moving from one zone to another. A wider band means more devices took that route.

Hover over a bar to see the count for that zone at that step. Hover over a band to see the count for movement from one zone to the next. These values are device counts (see below).

Filters and settings

Pathways uses the filter bar at the top of the page:

  • Building and floor – Pathways shows one floor at a time. The "All floors" option is not available on this page yet.

  • Date range – The timeframe to include.

  • Depth – How many steps of a visit to show, which is the number of columns in the diagram. The default is 3.

  • Max number – How many zones to show in each column. The busiest zones at each step appear by name, and the rest are combined into Other. The default is 3.

Group by category

Turn on the Group by category toggle at the bottom of the page to combine zones by space type (for example, all meeting rooms together). This gives a higher-level view of movement between types of spaces. The toggle is available for sites that have space categories configured.

Things to know

  • Counts are based on devices. Pathways currently only counts device sessions, so one person carrying more than one device, or returning more than once in the selected timeframe, can be counted more than once. The counts are most useful for comparing routes against each other. InnerSpace is working on de-duplicating Pathways so counts reflect people, in line with other InnerSpace metrics.

  • Small routes are hidden. Routes that make up a very small share of total movement are left out so the diagram stays readable.

  • "Other" combines smaller zones. If a zone you expect to see is missing, increase Max number.

  • Pathways must be enabled for your site. If you see a message saying Pathways isn't configured for your building or site, contact your InnerSpace team.

  • No data found. If you see "No sessions found," try a longer date range, a different floor or a different group.

Privacy

As with all InnerSpace insights, Pathways uses completely anonymized and aggregated data, scrubbed of all personally identifying information, in compliance with GDPR and ISO-27001 security and privacy standards.
